Canggu Warung Reviews: Honest Thoughts from a Week of Local Eating

After visiting several well-known warungs in Canggu, here’s a quick summary of what lived up to the hype — and what didn’t.

I honestly think this place is over-rated. I saw it on many “best Warungs in Canngu” lists so I thought it had to be worth a try. I found it a bit more expensive than other warungs and I found it less flavourful; although the beef rendang was good. Maybe it was a case of choosing the wrong dish, but I’d be going elsewhere before trying it again. The decor is nice and they have an air-conditioned section, if that’s a draw card for you.

Varuna Warung

This was the warung located closest to my homestay, so it was the warung I visited most frequently. It also makes the list of top 3.

I cannot deny that the food here was delicious. There was a massive queue when I arrived. To be honest, I was sceptical that it could live up to its’ popularity. They were reasonably efficient with the queue, although there was by far the longest wait of all the warungs I visited in Canggu. I think next time I might opt for an early or late lunch, but it wasn’t a big deal. I was still able to get a chair at a shared table.

This is one of my favourite warungs in Canggu. Prices are fair – if you’ve found a sit-down warung in this part of Canggu for cheaper, please let me know! The flavours are great. This is top three for me.

Oma Jamu

I visited this warung because I saw it on a top 5 list of Canggu warungs. If you are looking for a change of flavours – and especially if you are vegetarian or vegan, I recommend checking it out. It didn’t quite hit the spot for me, the chick-peas were cooked a little less than I like them, and the sauces were a bit bland for me. For people who can’t handle spicy food, this is a reasonable alternative.
