How I got into this…..
I started my first website (this one!) in May 2025. That same month, I decided to go all in and build a portfolio of websites. This was against the advice of ALL of my mentors. I didn’t care. I had a vision of being a digital asset manager and having the freedom to work for myself ,with enough diversification to weather changing trends and algorithm update storms.
Not long after this, I came across the book “Refuse to Choose!” by Barbara Sher, and it was a total game-changer. I finally stopped feeling guilty for not just focusing on a single website and monetizing it before building the next—exactly what every mentor told me to do.
However! There are downsides to this strategy….
Increased Costs
I had to pay for the domain name and hosting for each site from the get-go, despite having no income or proof of concept that I could actually monetize the project. While I had a friend who had hit the magical first milestone of 10k monthly website views, I needed a lot of faith to believe that it was going to work for me.
Delayed Monetization
Dividing attention across multiple sites divided my attention between them. Each site had minimal blog posts because my blogging was split across different sites.
A Need For Systems
This may also be an upside, as pretty early on I needed to a project management strategy to manage tasks and maintain sanity!
Multiplied Work Volume!
The main traffic generation strategy I use is driving clicks to my websites from Pinterest. With each new website, the number of pins I needed to create multiplied.
So, those are the downsides. If you aren’t a “Scanner” like me, you’ll probably have a much easier time launching your first site!
