Okay, so you want to start a fashion blog. Cool. First, reality check: it’s fun, it can make money, and it’s a great way to share your style, opinions, and personality with the world. But it is NOT a get rich quick scheme, that you can achieve without putting in some SERIOUS work. And I mean: hours and hours and hours. And starting one can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry — I’ve got you. Here’s everything you need to know, step by step, straight from the pros across the web – trust me, I knew less than nothing, I have done some SERIOUS research. These instructions were compiled from the blogging resources of the fashion blogging world OGs.

1. Decide on Your Fashion Niche

Fashion is huge. Pinterest likes content clusters (don’t worry about getting too technical about that just yet). The fastest way to develop content clusters is to target a specific niche. Some niche ideas:

  • Personal style / daily outfits
  • Sustainable and ethical fashion
  • Luxury fashion dupes
  • Street style photography
  • Plus-size fashion
  • DIY fashion projects
  • Beauty + fashion combos
  • Men’s fashion

I would recommend taking into consideration the demand and market size of that niche – from the context of search volume on the traffic funnel platforms you intend to use (Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, Youtube, Google, etc) and balancing that with your content creation strengths and interest. Take into consideration what you intend to target with affiliate links and how they fit in your niche, if you intend to monetize with affiliate links.

2. Buy Your Domain & Get Hosting

You need a self-hosted blog. That means yourblog.com, not yourblog.wordpress.com or yourblog.wix.com. Why? Because self-hosted sites:

  • You cannot claim your website on Pinterest with “yourblog.wordpress.com”
  • Make you eligible for affiliate programs
  • Gives you ownership of the domain

Hosting options:

  • Beginner-friendly: Bluehost ($2.95/month, easy to start)
  • When traffic grows: Deep Roots Hosting (super reliable, fast, great support)
  • Hostinger
  • Dreamhost

3. Choose Your Blogging Platform

99% of fashion bloggers use WordPress.org (self-hosted) because it’s flexible, scalable, and works with almost every plugin or affiliate program. WordPress.com or Wix is fine for hobby blogs, but if you want control and monetization options, go WordPress.org.

4. Create Your Blog Design & Brand

I ended up switching out from a free word press template to a paid template from 17th Avenue Designs and I regret not buying the theme before I started writing blogs as the switch was more time consuming that starting with the theme installed.

  • Choose a theme/template (I love Vivienne from 17th Avenue Designs — easy to customize and includes video and text instructions.
  • Set up headers, footers, and Google Analytics

Don’t spend hours picking the perfect shade of Pink instead of getting down to writing your first blog post writing!

5. Develop Your Unique Voice

This will develop as you write and your writing will improve over time. The biggest hurdle is fear and perfectionism. Just start writing. You can edit anything you previously published as your writing and keyword research improves. You will get feedback from your audience about what they want to read by looking at your analytics.

6. Create Content (LOTS of it)

Before you even launch, aim for at least 15–20 posts. That way, visitors won’t leave after seeing one or two empty pages. Think about your traffic funnel and write for that. If it’s very visual, like Pinterest and Instagram, then create visual friendly content. Think about what the user wants. For example, people visit Pinterest for ideas. Think what question they are seeking a solution for. For example, are they looking for ways to style a Trucker Hat? Write for your audience with a “helpful intent”. Some Ideas are:

  • Daily outfit posts
  • Style guides or how-to articles
  • Fashion shopping guides
  • DIY fashion projects
  • Reviews of brands, products, or seasonal collections

7. Promote Your Blog

Traffic is $$. Use:

  • Pinterest: design pins in Canva, use keyword research tools like PinClicks, Keywords Everywhere, Keysearch, or RankIQ
  • Instagram: post outfits, reels, behind-the-scenes
  • Other socials: TikTok, Twitter, YouTube (if you like video content)

Collaborate with other bloggers and brands to grow faster. Share, but don’t spam. Quality > quantity.

8. Monetize Your Fashion Blog

There’s money in blogging — but it’s slow at first. Options:

  • Affiliate links: Amazon, RewardStyle, ShopStyle
  • Sponsored posts & brand collabs: once you have traffic/followers
  • Display ads: Mediavine, Google AdSense (requires traffic)
  • Your own products or courses: if you’re building a brand

Tip: Use tools like Lasso to make affiliate links look polished.

9. Be Consistent

This is the advice EVERY. SINGLE. blogging guide gives. Your blog and social channels should have:

  • A posting schedule: e.g., 2 blog posts + 5 pins per week (you cans start with less and build up to more)

10. Build Your Instagram Following (optional)

Each platform is it’s own beast. Many bloggers use a Pinterest only strategy, and others focus on Instagram or Tik Tok. If you chose to start with Instagram your blog content should link back to Instagram and vice versa. You can also consider using a Link Tree for your Instagram account.

11. Learn & Use the Right Tools

Some essentials for fashion bloggers:

  • Design: Canva Pro (for pins, graphics, collages)
  • SEO: Yoast SEO, Stupid Simple SEO course
  • Pinterest: PinClicks, Keysearch, RankIQ, Perfecting Pinterest course
  • WordPress Plugins: Sitekit, Wordfence, UpdraftPlus, Lasso
  • Keyword Research: Keywords Everywhere, Ahrefs Keyword Generator

12. Learn From the Pros

Follow and study bloggers like:

  • Malena Permentier (lifestyle + blogging tips)
  • The Baller on a Budget (fashion + blogging guides)
  • Carly from Mommy On Purpose (Pinterest strategies)

See what works for them, take notes, but always stay authentic to your brand.

Examples of Great Fashion Blogs

  • The Baller on a Budget
  • Fashion Me Now
  • The Chriselle Factor
  • Gala Darling

Notice how they combine content, visuals, and social promotion while staying on brand.

15. Bonus Tips

  • Invest in your blog when it grows (better hosting, courses, professional templates)
  • Track analytics: know what’s working
  • Don’t buy clothes just for content — start with your closet
  • Engage with brands early: tag them, review products, pitch collabs

TL;DR

  1. Pick your niche
  2. Buy a domain + hosting
  3. Build your WordPress blog
  4. Publish content (with great visuals)
  5. Promote on social media
  6. Engage & build a community
  7. Monetize when traffic is there
  8. Stay consistent

That’s it. No fluff, just actionable steps. You don’t need to wait for the “perfect moment.” Start now, figure it out as you go, and keep learning.
